Innovations for the digital society of the future...are the focus of research and development work at the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI. In this area, Fraunhofer HHI is a world leader in the development of mobile and optical communication networks and systems, fiber optical sensor systems as well as the processing and coding of video signals.
Together with international partners from research and industry, Fraunhofer HHI works in the whole spectrum of digital infrastructure – from fundamental research to the development of prototypes and solutions. The institute develops standards for information and communication technologies and creates new applications as an industry partner.
Department Vision & Imaging Technologies (VIT)
With its three R&D groups, the Vision & Imaging Technologies (VIT) department addresses cutting-edge technologies in the fields of monocular, stereoscopic and multi-camera video. In this context, it covers the whole processing chain from initial content creation to final rendering with special focus on advanced 2D and 3D analysis and synthesis for post-production, computer vision, image understanding, human machine interaction and immersive media. In addition, advanced processing for complex systems consisting of multiple camera, sensors, displays, projectors or screens are covered.
Capture & Display Systems (CDS) group
Complimentarily to the two other groups, the Capture & Display Systems (CDS) group is focused on innovative software and hardware solutions for complex capture and display systems in the 2D and 3D video processing domain. The wide range of applications covers digital and 3D cinema, 3D broadcast, media production, digital signage, culture heritage as well as medical and industrial 3D processes. In this context the main expertise is to design and develop multi-camera systems, ultra-high definition (UHD) video screens, auto-stereoscopic displays and virtual-reality (VR) glasses. Current highlights are the TiME Lab for immersive UHD and 3D audio experiences, the Omnicam-360 for capturing panoramic UHD video, interactive streaming of panoramic video for VR glasses, tri- and quad-focal camera rigs for cinema and broadcast as well as the wide range of 3D processing tools and solutions for auto-stereoscopy.
